1st Ever Fitzwilliam Inn Spring Fling

New England had suffered from three straight weeks of cold rainy, and sometimes snowy, weather. The forecast for Saturday, 4/29 was cloudy with a chance of showers. However, the weather man was wrong and it turned out to be an absolutely picture perfect spring day with lots of sun and warm temperatures. It was a welcome relief after all the bad weather and the competitors, judges and organizers made the best of it. It was a great day!!
The contest was hosted by the historic Fitzwilliam Inn. New England Barbecue Society Vice President Charlie Pini is the chef at the Inn and did a great job organizing the event. Everyone arrived Friday evening for a BBQ buffet dinner prepared by Charlie that included ribs, chicken, pulled pork, sausage and a whole suckling pig. After the dinner NEBS provided a lot of business for the bar at the Inn.
Saturday was the competition with live entertainment provided by The Everyday Blues Band and they were great. If anyone in the New England area needs a great blues band to provide entertainment, you can contact Brian Gill at 603-242-3646. Several of us stayed over Saturday night and again provided lots of business for the bar at the Inn.
The categories for the competition were burgers, chicken, sausage and steak tips. To make things a little more interesting, there was also an Iron Chef category. Competitors were presented with a box containing ingredients from which they must prepare an entire meal that included all the ingredients in the box. The ingredients were secret until 10:00 AM the day of the contest when they were revealed to be a portabello mushoom, a tomato, a container of brown mustard, and a piece of venison. Many of the contestants were tempted to cook and eat it themselves rather than submit it to the judges.
Everyone had a great time and we all agreed it was the best event ever for NEBS and we are hoping the Fitzwilliam Inn will host it again next year.
